Mrs. Gibson's Kindergarten Classroom
For my Educational Core Studies (ECS) 100 Class in the Winter 2016 semester, I had the privilege of working at St. Peter School with a fantastic and hard working kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Gibson. This experience has made me even more interested in the primary grade levels (pre-kindergarten to grade 5). The kid's struggles, social skills, need for love, learning styles, diverse needs, etc, has helped me learn so much about what students need and what it's like to teach. I cannot wait for my next field placement further in my degree.
My last day was on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. As my field experience has come to a close it's difficult to part with the students. I have loved ECS 100 and the field experience because the students are fantastic to be around. Here is my final field blog post after my last day of field experience:
The online questions throughout the course helped me because they were interconnected with one another; they were all relevant to what I saw in our field experiences and what I will have to consider as I approach having my own classrooms. All of the questions made me think and dig deeper than I am be accustomed to. The questions demanded that I actually take interest in my field placement and try to learn from it rather than forgetting everything. Also, the question topics reoccured every week even if the topic changed (ex. I thought about the use of technology in the classroom even though technology was only a part of select weeks).
For the weekly questions that required a reflection from my own schooling experience, I was able to draw some parallels and make connections. I think this helped my learning because I know what I disliked as a student during my schooling, which can help me to become a better teacher. The weekly topics and discussions are so much more relevant now (ex. technology, flipped classrooms, GSD, etc.) then they were when I was in primary, middle years, and secondary schooling. This helps me realize how quickly things can change and I've thought about the fact that in the next 3 years before I graduate things will change again! That idea is so intimidating! The interconnectedness of the topics also made me realize how demanding/exhausting/difficult/complex teaching is going to be, because there's so many things to consider.
This experience has positively affected my journey to becoming a teacher! It has reaffirmed that I do indeed want to teach! The experience has made me realistically realize what teaching is going to be like.
4 of my professional goals are:
- Continue to attend professional development opportunities because it will help me and, therefore, my future students.
- Try a flipped classroom! Either in field work if I get the chance to teach a lesson and/or in my own classroom in a few years.
- Work with children during the summer as a part of a summer job, whether they are disabled, young, older, of different ethnicity, etc. I want to expand my experiences and knowledge.
- Experience job shadowing in Middle Years because that is what I am in and I am unsure if Middle Years would be right for me because I was placed in a kindergarten classroom and loved it! I want to figure out what are group I want to teach.
